Three digital Master Keys: The beginning of smart electronic ticketing system in public transport in Attica

Christos Spirtzis, the Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks announced the launch of smart electronic ticketing system in public transport in Attica during a ceremony that took place in November 2015. The project begins in a symbolic way with the release of three master security Keys provided by the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport & Networks, the Athens Urban Transport Organisation S.A. (OASA S.A.) and the private company that will develop the ticketing system.

The project begins with the production of smart e-ticket microchips and the scanners that will read them. The scanners will be placed in all public transport means in Athens. According to Mr. Spirtzis, the electronic ticketing system for all public transport will firstly result in a flexible and fare tickets’ pricing policy (reduced fares for small distances, higher fares for longer trips), while it will essentially help the state mechanism to deal with passengers who don’t issue tickets.

Smart electronic ticketing system will be introduced in Athens in the end of 2016, while it is within the plans of the Ministry to cover other big Greek cities in the forthcoming future.
