The GreenYourMove project journey application is ready to use from July 2018

The LIFE GreenYourMove European Programme aims at developing a journey application that will promote the use of public transport while also minimising greenhouse gas emissions. The journey application easily and quickly finds the best public transport itineraries from one point to another and includes a network of 3 European countries (Greece, Czech Republic, and Slovakia). It aims at minimising passenger commutes and reducing the emissions produced by commuters. An early version of the journey application was presented to public transport agencies in 2016 and the platform itinerary database was completed in June of the same year. In designing the journey application, a new gas emission calculation model was developed, while the journey application uses a combination of heuristic and analytic approaches to find the best itinerary.

For Greece the journey application uses the network of urban and intercity public transport of Athens, Alexandroupoli, Volos, Chalcis, Ioannina, Katerini, Komotini, Lamia, Larissa, Patras, Serres, Thessaloniki, Thebes, Trikala, Xanthi, and Rhodes. Regarding train networks, the main user in Greece is TrainOSE, which is also a project partner. A large part of TrainOSE’s network is being upgraded. The use of electric trains on its new itineraries lowers the energy footprint of trains in Greece, while the new itineraries were planned in the framework of the project in combination with the improvements to the existing rail network. These improvements were implemented aiming mainly at providing better services to passengers, “camaraderie”, and decreasing wait times at interchange stations while waiting for connecting trains.

The journey application is available for use by the public from July 2018, while its promotional campaign will take place in September 2018 during the European Mobility Week. From September 2018 the journey application will include the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Cyprus. Apart from the web version of the journey application for computers, it will also be available for android and iOS devices.

LIFE GreenYourMove (GYM) is co-funded by the European Commission as part of the axis for the environment - LIFE14 ENV/GR/000611, the Green Fund, and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. It is a cooperation of a total of 6 partners from Greece (University of Thessaly, AVMaps GIS S.A., TRAINOSE S.A., and EMISIA S.A), the Czech Republic (CHAPSspol. s.r.o.), and Slovakia (INROP), coordinated by the University of Thessaly.
